Back in September 2024, I spent 1 week in Sardinia, travelling North to South with a car and also train. If you’re planning a trip to Sardinia, renting a car is essential as you’ll get to remote spots. Transports are scarce. This island is packed with stunning beaches of turquoise mediterranean waters, ancient history and of course, great food.
It’s the perfect destination for any traveller. If you’re looking for luxury, the north coast also known as Costa Esmeralda and Porto Cervo are the spots to head. If you’re after ancient history, Cagliari, the capital city is full of ancient gems. But there’s more… Keep reading this guide to help you plan an unforgettable experience.

What To Do in Sardinia
1. Take a Tour to La Maddalena Archipelago
Take a boat tour and discover the secluded beaches and crystal-clear waters of this paradise. Don’t miss Spargi and Budelli, two of the most picturesque islands. You can either spend a night in the Island and explore the archipelago from there or book a tour from Palau.
2. Explore Alghero and Neptune’s Grotto
Discover the charm of Alghero, a historic coastal town with cobblestone streets and Catalan influences. Just outside the city lies Neptune’s Grotto, an extraordinary sea cave adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites.
3. Stroll the Piazzetta in Porto Cervo
The heart of Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo’s Piazzetta is a must-visit for its luxury shops, charming cafes, and buzzing nightlife. Wander the marina to admire the yachts or relax with a cocktail overlooking the harbor. You can also explore the beaches of Porto Cervo although you either pay for parking almost everywhere or walk from your accommodation in case it’s near.

Begin your journey in the Castello District, perched on a hilltop, where you’ll find narrow cobblestone streets, ancient fortifications, and panoramic vistas over the city and sea. Visit landmarks like the Bastione di Saint Remy and Cagliari Cathedral for a glimpse into the city’s past.
5. Relax on Cala Brandinchi Beach
Nicknamed “Little Tahiti,” this beach near San Teodoro and close to Olbia is famous for its shallow, crystal-clear waters and powdery sand, making it ideal for families and snorkelers.
6. La Pelosa Beach – Sassari Province
Arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, Spiaggia La Pelosa boasts powdery white sand and shimmering turquoise waters. Located in the Sassari Province, this beach is perfect for snorkeling and family relaxation. Be sure to visit early in the day, as it’s a popular spot during peak season.
7. Arutas Beach – Oristano
Is Arutas, located on Sardinia’s west coast near Oristano, is one of the island’s most unique and breathtaking beaches. Known as the “Rice Grain Beach,” it features sand made up of tiny quartz pebbles in shades of white, pink, and green, making it truly unforgettable
