Why Every Traveller Needs an AirHelp Plan Before Their Next Flight (And What It Cost Me Not to Have One)

There are travel lessons you learn the easy way — a guidebook tip, a friend’s advice, a well-timed blog post. And then there are the ones you learn the hard way, sitting in an airport gate at 3 pm, watching your flight getting cancelled on the departures board, wondering how you’re supposed to get to your destination now.

My trip to the Azores – São Miguel – was one of the latter.


The €1200 I Left on the Table (True Story)

Last time I flew to São Miguel — a stunning volcanic island that deserves an entire post of its own (and has one, which you can read [here]) — I was travelling with family. We were flying with SATA Airlines (operated by TAP Air Portugal), full of excitement about the ocean, the calderas, the food, the slowness of island life.

All went well until our return flight got cancelled on a Sunday afternoon – they told us we had to catch the next flight Monday morning – a lost day of work for me + extra fees on the car parking…

Four flight disruptions across our group. At the time I had no plan, no strategy, and honestly very little idea of my rights as a passenger.

A few weeks later, a friend asked: “Did you claim compensation?”

I had no idea what she was talking about.

She explained that under EU Regulation EC 261/2004, passengers on eligible flights that are delayed by more than 3 hours, cancelled, or overboard are entitled to compensation — and that a service called AirHelp could handle the entire claim on your behalf, with no upfront cost.

Even without an AirHelp subscription, she told me I could have claimed around €150 per eligible flight — with no plan needed, just AirHelp taking a percentage if they win.
