Hello travellers!
Back in May 2024, we spent 5 days in this gem of the Atlantic. São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores archipelago and a dream destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those in search of tranquility. From breathtaking volcanic landscapes to lush greenery and crystal-clear lakes, this island offers unforgettable experiences.
For fans of the Netflix series “Rabo de Peixe” (Turn of the Tide), São Miguel also offers a glimpse into the real-life fishing village of Rabo de Peixe, which inspired the show.
The island is about 63 km (39 mi) long and 15 km (9 mi) wide, making it relatively easy to explore by car in just a few days. Here’s your ultimate guide to the top things to do and the best places to stay in São Miguel.

7 Best Things to Do in São Miguel, Azores
1. Explore Sete Cidades and Its Twin Lakes
One of the most iconic sights in the Azores, Sete Cidades is a stunning twin-lake system nestled inside a massive volcanic crater. The contrast between the blue and green lakes is incredible. Enjoy panoramic views from Vista do Rei, or hike along the crater’s edge for an unforgettable experience. You can also rent a kayak boat locally to experience the lakes.
2. Furnas: Terra Nostra Park and Hot Springs
Furnas is a geothermal paradise, home to steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, and soothing hot springs. Visit Terra Nostra Park, where you can soak in its famous iron-rich thermal waters surrounded by lush botanical gardens. For a more intimate and relaxing experience, head to Poça da Dona Beija for an evening dip in its warm, mineral-rich pools.
3. Visit Lagoa do Fogo
My favourite! Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire – cover picture) is a pristine crater lake with breathtaking scenery. Accessible via hiking trails or scenic drives, this untouched paradise offers panoramic views and a peaceful escape from the crowds.
4. Discover the Tea Plantations of Gorreana
São Miguel is home to the only tea plantations in Europe. Visit the Gorreana Tea Plantation to walk through lush green fields, learn about the traditional tea-making process, and sample locally grown black and green tea.
5. Go Whale Watching
The Azores are one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Book a tour from Ponta Delgada to spot sperm whales, dolphins, and other marine life in their natural habitat.
6. Go Hiking – Diverse trails
São Miguel offers incredible trails through volcanic craters, coastal cliffs, and lush forests. Popular routes include the Salto do Prego waterfall hike (distance 4.5 km), Lagoa do Fogo (11 km (round trip), Pico da Vara (7 km) and the scenic trail around Sete Cidades (Distance: 7.7 km (one way)). We did all of them. The most challenging one is Pico da Vara which is the highest peak in São Miguel.

7. Experience Local Cuisine
Don’t leave São Miguel without trying Cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew slow-cooked underground using volcanic heat. You will find the best restaurants in Furnas region and there are plenty to choose from. Other must-try local dishes include fresh seafood, queijo fresco (fresh cheese), and sweet pineapple from the island’s plantations (you must try this!).
